Whether you’re out for a cruise around town or driving your daily commute, it’s important to have control over your vehicle. Power steering working is what ultimately makes that possible. Especially when driving at low speeds, power steering allows you to easily turn and maneuver your steering wheel.

But what exactly is power steering and why is it so essential in your vehicle? Join us as we answer questions about everything you need to know when it comes to power steering.

What Is Power Steering?

If you’ve ever turned the steering wheel in your vehicle, you’ve used your power steering.

Power steering is a mechanical system that reduces the effort required to turn a vehicle’s steering wheel.

When traveling at low speeds, it’s the answer as to why you can still maneuver your vehicle. Without power steering, it would be nearly impossible to turn the steering wheel, especially when your vehicle is stopped.

How Does Power Steering Work?

When looking at how power steering works, you must first note the different types of power steering as they work differently. Let’s explore hydraulic versus electric power steering.

Hydraulic Power Steering

The hydraulic power steering relies entirely on the flow of fluid. It works by using fluid to intensify the force applied to turn your front wheels. Then, to provide hydraulic pressure to the steering system, the hydraulic fluid is pressurized by a pump from the engine.

When the steering wheel is turned, hydraulic pressure is then applied to the steering gear. This allows your wheels to turn when you move the steering wheel.

Electric Power Steering

The electric power steering uses an electric motor instead. The motor draws energy from the vehicle’s electrical system to provide steering assistance.

Sensors detect the effort that the driver applies to the wheel and then decide how much to assist. Electric power steering is beneficial because it allows for a seamless adaptation to changing driving conditions.

Why Is Power Steering Important?

Without power steering, the steering wheel would be quite difficult to turn, especially when maneuvering around tight turns or parking. It improves the vehicle’s overall control and stability, especially in emergencies, and enables quicker responses in unexpected situations.
