As winter approaches and weather begins to cool down, the need for properly working heating in your vehicle increases. Unfortunately, starting up your heater is not always successful after months of cranking the A/C in your car.

Luckily, a faulty heater is easily diagnosed. Let’s check out some of the problems your heater could be experiencing when it’s not heating the cabin effectively.

If your heater is malfunctioning, stop by Boggs. Our team is equipped to troubleshoot your vehicle’s heating system and get your car pumping warm air again. Click the link below to set up an appointment with our expert technicians today.

Defective Thermostat

One of the most common causes of failing heat in your vehicle is a faulty thermostat. Over time, your thermostat can become stuck open or closed. If it’s stuck closed, no coolant can reach the radiator, which can cause your engine to overheat and lead to more significant issues.

When the thermostat is stuck open, your engine could become over-cooled. This often leads to issues with the heating system as only cool air may be able to flow from the vents.

Low Coolant

Although low coolant levels are bad for the engine, they’re also damaging to your heating system. When your coolant levels drop below normal, there’s not enough fluid circulating to the heater core. This means there’s no way for the air to heat up and circulate throughout the cabin.

Faulty Blower Motor Resistor

If your blower motor resistor fails, you likely won’t be able to get airflow within your vehicle at all. The blower motor resistor controls the power of the blower motor. When the resistor fails, so does the blower motor. This means that air pressure cannot be produced, meaning little to no heat can be pumped into your car.

Clogged Cabin Air Filter

The primary function of the cabin air filter is to filter dust and debris from the air that’s pumped into the cabin. When the air filter becomes clogged, airflow becomes restricted as a whole. Clogging of the cabin air filter prevents warm air from reaching the cabin, and you’ll likely notice your car’s heater isn’t working.

Leaky Radiator

Another issue that’s typically associated with the engine is a leaky radiator. Even though a leaky radiator would cause problems with the engine, it can also affect how well the heating system in your vehicle works. When the radiator is leaking, coolant is unable to reach the heater core. This ultimately causes your heater to not work properly.
