Gas prices are always fluctuating, and a great way to pay less at the pump is by avoiding these habits that can tank your gas mileage.

Aggressive Driving

According to the US Department of Energy, aggressive driving like speeding, along with rapid acceleration and braking can lower your gas mileage by 33% on highways and by 5% at slower speeds.

Idling For Long Periods

Most newer cars use less fuel to stop and start the engine than letting it idle for long periods of time. In the winter sometimes idling is inevitable to keep warm, but make sure you don’t rev your engine while you’re waiting for it to warm up.

Avoiding Cruise Control

Cruise control is one of the best ways to improve your gas mileage. Setting your car on cruise control can save up to 6% on fuel costs because you’re driving at a steady speed rather than constantly hitting the accelerator and brake pedals.

Using A Roof Rack

When you don’t use your roof rack regularly, take it off your car. Driving with your roof rack creates air resistance, which makes your engine work harder and burn through gas at a faster rate. Carrying things on a roof rack like bikes, skis, storage pods, etc. can drop fuel efficiency by up to 25% on highways!

Ignoring Regular Maintenance

It’s important to keep your vehicle regularly maintained, but did you know that it can also improve your gas mileage? Regular tune-ups, the right motor oil for your engine, correct tire pressure levels, and clean air filters all improve gas mileage.
