Preventive auto care is the best way to protect your vehicle. That includes an investment in regular tire maintenance! Taking care of your tires means you won’t have to replace them as often, not to mention helps keep you safe on the road.

The Best Ways To Take Care Of Your Tires

It’s easy to forget about regular tire maintenance until something goes wrong. Either you get a flat or your tire pops while you’re driving.

By taking care of your tires you can often address potential problems before they become bigger issues that threaten the safety of your vehicle.

Monitor Tire Pressure

Driving without the right pressure in your tires can affect your gas mileage as well as impair your car’s performance. Keep in mind that cold weather can also make tire pressure change more dramatically, so check your tire pressure every month!

You can find the ideal level of tire pressure for your vehicle in your car’s manual. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a leading cause of tire-related vehicle accidents is under-inflated tires.

Check Your Tire Treads

The treads on your tires are essential for making sure your car can safely navigate roads and maintain proper traction. Over time these treads can wear down, so checking their wear is important!

An easy trick is to use the “penny” test. Take a penny and place it inside your tire’s treads with Lincoln’s head facing down. If part of his head is still covered by the tread, your tire should be fine to use. However, if you can see Lincoln’s whole head on the penny you need to replace the tire.

Rotate Your Tires

Rotating your tires helps prevent uneven wear and tear on the tread. We usually recommend having your tires rotated once or twice a year, depending on the mileage. It’s easy to have this service done while your car is at Boggs for an oil change!

Don’t Overload Your Vehicle

Did you know that every vehicle has information listed on the door frame showing how much weight it can safely handle? If you drive a truck that regularly hauls heavy loads, make sure to keep an eye on how much weight your truck can safely carry.

Regularly carrying heavier loads can cause excess wear and tear on your tires and also affect your vehicle’s suspension and the way it handles.

Always Install Matching Tires

If you have a tire pop and need to buy a new one, always buy two and put them on the rear of your vehicle. This gives the rear of the vehicle more support while handling wet or slick road conditions.

Having mismatched tires (only replacing one at a time) can damage a vehicle’s handling and also cause more wear and tear to your other tires.

Don’t Forget Your Spare

It’s easy to remember to take care of the 4 tires currently on your car, but what about your spare? Make sure to regularly check the air pressure in your spare tire as well as the condition (check for dry rot, etc.). When you need a spare tire you want to make sure it’s ready to safely replace your flat.
